Mariachi for Dia de Muertos
Yesterday, I went downtown to see the annual Dia de Muertos concert. There are always fantastic dance performances by a youth dance group, but this time there were also mariachis for the first time in several years!
A black ink sketch of two mariachi guitar players. The player on the left has a guitarrón and the one on the right has a vihuela.
I enjoy drawing musicians (as we know) but this is the most detail I've ever tried to cram into their faces. It's tough with the small size, but it also keeps me from thinking too hard about it.
There were several community ofrendas around the square. There was one for people killed by ICE, another for black civil rights leaders and victims of police brutality, and one for LGBT murder victims. ICE hasn't been as brazen here as it has been in other parts of Colorado and the US, but that hasn't diminished the widespread negative impact its actions have had on people. Almost all of our Latino students have had contact or know someone who has had contact with ICE.
If you have the means, please consider donating to a local immigrant advocacy/defense organization if you're in a country that is engaging in violence against immigrants (not just the US). Organizations local to me include Alianza NORCO, Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition, and Colorado Rapid Response Network. Also, check in with the immigrants in your life and see if there's anything you can do to make life a little easier for them.
