The Chip Bag

2 million website questions

I love me a good prompt list as a substitute for actually working on stuff. Here's one with a million questions. You, too, can answer a million questions by copying 100webmaster.txt!

1. Please introduce yourself.

I'm Kale and this is jackass

2. How long have you been making websites?

Intermittently since 2010 :(

3. And what got you into the hobby?

Pokemon and anime fansites. I was very sure I would become internet famous this way.

4. What kind of website are you most interested in?

Anything interesting. I like to browse websites with some stuff in them. I love a good blog! Pretty but empty websites don't appeal to me.

5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?

There is no plan

6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.

I hoover up inspiration from a lot of places. I don't have a "biggest" one. Also, asking me these kinds of questions is a guaranteed way to make me forget every website I've ever seen, so good job.

7. What's your favourite part about making websites?

I like that a website is something that's always evolving. I can tweak things as much as I want. There is no feeling of "oh shit I just posted this drawing and now I realize I need to fix this and this and this and"

8. And the thing you struggle with the most?

I don't enjoy actual web design that much. I'm not that creative! I like boxes!

9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?

You think I'm going to make a new design for every page?!

10. How confident are you with CSS?

I can achieve what I want to achieve with it.

11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?

Sort of? I've figured out when to use it but not when it shouldn't be used.

12. What is your favourite HTML element?

details because I love that you can click on something to make it open and close now. We were using so much JQuery for shit like this once.

13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?

Paste all the shit that goes into the head tag in there

14. Do you know JavaScript?

Unfortunately yes

15. How about PHP?

Unfortunately yes

16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?

Yes, if the theme is deeply unserious bullshit

17. Are you more focused on content or design?

Content

18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?

Unfortunately yes

19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?

I don't respect websites that ditch basic accessibility and responsiveness features in the name of nostalgia (it was already annoying at the time). I do like seeing people update old-style web design for modern technology.

20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?

I check because I like feeling a sense of superiority over other people's HTML.

21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners? / 22. What do you think of button walls?

Buttons are fun, and I have a small button wall so there's that. I think button marquees are annoying, though.

23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?

I would probably make something similar. It's convergent evolution. Maybe I'd organize it better though...

24. Are you envious of other people's websites?

Nah

25. What text editor do you use?/26. Why do you use that one?

I've used Notepad++ for the longest time, but it's a Windows program. The closest Linux equivalent I've found is Geany. I'm a VSCode hater because it's bloated and annoying.

27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?

L + Ratio + You host your images on Discord

28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?

I do not give even a fraction of a shit about any online drama surrounding this subject. However, I did just now learn that Nekoweb allows SSI while Neocities doesn't, so if you're asking me from a functionality standpoint, Nekoweb is the better cat.

29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?

I can get an exact number, which is even better! It's 300MB and change (but that also counts all the subdomains). I think that's a pretty good number for all the stuff I have stuffed in here, but I'm also not that concerned with keeping my usage as low as possible.

30. Do you keep local backups of your files?

The local files are the originals. The server is borrowing them.

31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?

I like anything that I can read without hurting my eyes or guessing where links are. I don't think a website needs to be minimalist to accomplish this.

32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?

Green because kale is green

33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?

"Quitting" is a weird word to use because the website still exists even when I stop updating it for a while. So... not really?

34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?

I've gotten to know a lot of great people from doing this!

35. Do people in your real life know about your website?

Some friends do. I try to keep this quarantined from people who I want to impress.

36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?

This is one of my first posts in over a year, so no! Before that I was averaging about a major update or blog post per month, which you may or may not view as "often."

37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?

All of my major design phases have lasted at least 6 months. I find design to be the most tedious and baffling part of the process, so I don't enjoy reinventing the wheel if the current design is meeting my needs.

38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?

Yes

39. Do you do web design professionally? / 40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?

Absolutely not. I will continue making below Colorado median income in education.

41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?

If they email me first. I'm not great at initiating emails.

42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?

Nah

43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?

I use Discord and will continue to do so until it becomes unbearably shitty. We'll see!

44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?

I don't usually listen to music while I work. Part of this is I'm too lazy to put something on and part of it is I have auditory memory good enough to play songs in my head... If I do put on actual music, it's whatever I've been listening to at the time. I don't have specific "work music."

45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?

I prefer a catch-all thing because I'm too fickle to wall stuff off. I do have a few subdomains, but I'm doubting the existence of some of them because they feel more cumbersome than anything right now...

46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?

This is a very funny joke question. Who only does one topic? Bananas.

47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?

You can draw whatever conclusions you want about me from what I put here

48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?

I don't know if they think I'm a "good friend," but I know people now!

49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?

They do what I want them to do so sure.

50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?

There are a lot of things, but a pet peeve is styling things that are not links like links (or vice versa).

51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?

Make sure that your text doesn't spill out of the container that's holding it. Go learn how to wrap your text!

52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?

I try my best with semantic HTML, but I don't think it needs to be perfect if your page is already linear. I also think it's better to default to generic markup if you're not sure about something instead of giving it meaning it doesn't have.

53. Do you consider different browsers?

Well-written responsive design should work fine for all browsers (outside of minor cosmetic differences) at this point. Things were different when browser developers were still figuring out what the fuck was going on, but I still tried my best.

54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.

I use Firefox. I don't care if other people use it, but at least stop using Chrome!

55. And what OS are you on? / 56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?

I use Ubuntu. I used to use Linux Mint. Both are fine. I don't have strong opinions about Linux distributions. I guess it's kind of annoying that Ubuntu puts the time at the top of the screen?

57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?

That's kind of my thing

58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?

There's no reason to use it. Stop it.

59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?

I avoid joining webrings that require client-side Javascript on principle and generally prefer directories because of all the complications that arise from broken links. But they're harmless and fun.

60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?

I don't think I'm cut out for shrines in the traditional fansite sense. There isn't anything I can talk about that much. They're fun to look at though! I like the really content-dense ones where you can see the subject has taken permanent rent-free residence in the author's head.

61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?

I don't know what this means

62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?

I don't have any sort of goal or ideal in mind, but I always like to learn new things!

63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?

Most of the (very few) images on the main website have been produced by my hand, for better or worse!

64. What are your favourite resource sites?

How to Center in CSS

65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?

I think fundamentally all my layouts have the same general "look" to them. I don't mind this.

66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?

Responsive design isn't hard and you should learn it from the beginning. It's only hard if you have to unlearn a bunch of bad habits.

67. Do you keep all your styling in a stylesheet? Or do you use inline styling? (Rephrased this question for clarity)

I keep as much in the stylesheet as possible. If it's something weirdly specific like making one word red, that can go inline.

68. What do you think of frameset layouts?

I don't like iframes and I think it's unfortunate they're coming back because Neocities doesn't allow SSI.

69. How about table-based layouts?

I hated table layouts even when they were popular. They've always been annoying to work with. (But if you want the look of a table without the annoyance, you can try... Totally Tabular!!)

70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?

What does this mean. Do I have preferences? I think all of them have their use cases, but one column is great when you're lazy (I'm lazy).

71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?

For the initial construction of a page, the CSS, but after that I don't really touch it!

72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.

I think even text-based documents can benefit from some basic styling for readability. See classless CSS styles.

73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?

I usually make layouts only when I need to, but I occasionally make them for fun if I want to try something with CSS. The pride layouts came from me futzing with gradients.

74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?

I'm pretty sure I know more than some people and less than others.

75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?

If there's something neat I want to steal, sure!

76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?

I started with the WYSIWG editor built in to SeaMonkey (which is apparently still being maintained??) but was quickly dismayed by how limiting it was. After that, I think I just hacked my way through with layout templates until I passively absorbed enough knowledge to make my own.

77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?

I try not to, but I did force the details element to turn into a mobile menu (see accessible hamburger menu) and I don't feel bad about it. It's still more ethical than the hidden checkbox...

78. Thoughts on floating elements?

Float used to see widespread use for sidebars, but flexbox is way better at that now. Floats are meant for images or anything else that text needs to wrap around, so you should use them for that.

79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?

I use em/rem and percentages most of the time. I use pixels if I want to cap the size of something for larger screens.

80. Do you have a favourite font?

I started using Atkinson Hyperlegible on principle, but I've grown attached to it because it's also very nice to look at.

81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?

It would be fun for a one-off thing but I'm way too annoying and unreliable for an ongoing commitment!

82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?

I love ctrl+clicking through a good button wall!

83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?

I put websites I like to keep tabs on on my links page, and I subscribe to the RSS feeds of blogs I like. I am perpetually surprised that anyone looks at this website.

84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?

How could a fish with a computer have done all this?

85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?

I love all sorts of tech but am not a collector for practical and financial reasons. Uh... I kept my iPod classic around to listen to music on (and because its will to live even after almost 20 years is very impressive). Does that count? The one completely impractical thing I've held onto is the Sony CD Mavica because it represents everything I love about the technological advancements of the 90s-00s.

86. How often and for how long are you online?

Depends!

87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?

Whoever looks at it. I don't do anything "for" anyone in particular.

88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?

Implying I don't already use XHTML by default

89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?

I do, and I think everyone should learn basic programming principles like logic and basic computer algorithms. Syntax for whatever language you want is Googlable, but the underlying logic will never change.

I've used Java, R, Matlab, and Python outside of the website, and Javascript and PHP in it. The most intensive thing I've done for the website is build the commenting system, which was more of a challenge on the development and database-building side of things than the actual implementation. The implementation is just a lot of pulling from the database (boring).

90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?

I think they're great but will never use one. I'm lazy and don't like having to study documentation to make my system work with someone else's.

91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?

Nah

92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?

Nah

93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?

L + Ratio + You edit your files on your server

94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?

Nah

95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?

I used to delete stuff like crazy, which is frustrating for current me because I don't have very much preserved from my old websites. Nowadays, I take stuff offline if I don't care for it anymore, but I'll still keep a local copy for myself (or if I change my mind).

96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?

I would continue paying for the host/domain for as long as I can or migrate to a free host. I think the website is still of use even if it's not being actively worked on.

97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?

You can draw whatever conclusions you want about me from what I put here

98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?

Curi wins on the basis that I've known them for 8 years now. They don't have a website but have contributed a few things to the Salad Zine, like Sunshine.

99. And do you optimise the images on your website?

Yeah, pictures are way too big these days. Images on your 800 pixel wide layout don't need to be 2000 pixels wide!

100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.

Never ask me questions ever again
